Northeast Ohio One-Day Golf Itinerary
This itinerary offers some helpful suggestions for planning your golf getaway to Ohio’s Northeast region. You’ll play on some of the nation’s best public courses, and take in the delights of Cleveland and the surrounding countryside.
DAY 1:
What better way to start your golf getaway than in the Rock and Roll City? Drive or fly into Cleveland, and prepare yourself for two days of incredible golfing experiences.
Where to Golf: Book a tee time at StoneWater Golf Clubin Highland Heights, just minutes east of downtown Cleveland. This great golf course winds throughout 178 acres of wooded wetlands, with water hazards on 16 of the 18 holes. These water features necessitate 23 wooden bridges. Seventy sand bunkers include some of the largest and most dramatic hazards imaginable. The challenging par-72, 7,002-yard course is known as one of the best public courses in Northeast Ohio. The cost for 18 holes ranges from $30 to $106.
Where to stay: Check into the posh Intercontinental Hotel, in Cleveland, from $179, or stay at the comfortable suburban Radisson Hotel & Suites Cleveland - Eastlake, in Eastlake, from $79.
What else to see: StoneWater is just a stone’s throw away from Cleveland, the Renaissance City. Soak in the arts in University Circle and see a Broadway show at Playhouse Square. Catch an outdoor concert at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or relax in the Flats, Cleveland’s waterfront entertainment district. Nosh at one of the city’s excellent restaurants and experience Cleveland’s melting pot of cultures and flavors at the West Side Market. |
DAY 2:
On the second day of your golf junket, drive east along the Ohio Turnpike (I-80), through fields and forests to Trumbull County.
Where to golf: Test your game at Avalon Lakes Golf Course, in Warren. Avalon Lakes has been ranked one of the best golf courses in the country, and that was before its recent multi-million dollar renovation. The course is one of the few in the nation that has a 21 st century design but looks like it has been there forever. The par-72, 7,551-yard course has been designed so that a beginning golfer can play and have a very enjoyable experience, but from the championship tees, it is necessary for the best golfers to take advantage of the abundant risk-reward shots in order to make par. To play 18 holes, it will cost between $85 and $150.
Where to stay: Try the course’s own Avalon Inn in Warren, with rooms from $99 or the Comfort Inn in Warren, from $60.
What else to see: Warren lies just south of Ohio’s premier wine growing region, with more than 20 vintners producing world-class bottles of Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin and ice wine. Also, to the north and west of Warren lies one of the world’s largest Amish communities. In the Middlefield-Mesopotamia Amish area you can visit cheese houses, furniture makers and quaint general stores, or just take a Sunday drive among the buggies through the idyllic, verdant countryside. It may be a little kitschy, but indulge the child within with a quick 18 holes at America’s oldest putt-putt golf course, located at Geneva-on-the-Lake, due north of Warren. This course, which dates from the 1920s, features all the standard putt-putt icons: the windmill, the water hazards and the 18 th hole that swallows your ball. When you finish your round, take in this retro resort community on Lake Erie’s shore. Watch classic cars and motorcycles cruise “The Strip,” grab a burger at 1950s-style Eddie’s Grill and top it off with a Madsen’s Doughnut. |
