Southeast Ohio One-Day Golf Itinerary

With stunning mountain scenery, a unique blend of cultures and hidden artistic treasures, Southeast Ohio is the perfect destination for golfers who want to get away from it all. You’ll find world-class golf at courses secluded in the forests as well as at quiet country resorts.

DAY 1:

Begin your golfing adventure in Southeast Ohio in beautiful Muskingum County. From the city of Zanesville, make your way north amidst rolling hills and verdant pastures.

Where to golf: Longaberger Golf Club , in Nashport, is situated on scenic hills among ravines, valleys and elevation changes up to 100 feet. The course is very forested, but the fairways aren’t traditionally tree lined. Despite the abundance of trees, fairway play is very accommodating with generous landing areas. Second shots on this 7,243-year, par-72 course prove to be as challenging as any golfer will find. At $125 for 18 holes, treat yourself to one of the best public courses in the nation.

Where to stay: Cherry Valley Lodge, a resort-style hotel with an onsite arboretum in Newark, has rooms from $139; the Inn at Dresden offers a quaint country stay from $85.

What else to see: You’re already at Longaberger Golf Club, so why not see what the Longaberger family is famous for? The Longaberger Basket Company is headquartered in Newark in a seven-story office building that looks just like one if its trademark baskets. Visit the Longaberger Homestead in Frazeysburg, where you can make your own basket. Then head south for an afternoon of outdoor fun at Buckeye Lake State Park. Here, you’ll find unique ecological wonders and plenty of boating enjoyment.

DAY 2:

Drive a bit south of Zanesville to find a different type of golf experience. The Appalachian culture of southern Muskingum County is apparent as you wind through the forested hills. Before you tee off, stop at a roadside stand for a breakfast of fresh peaches.

Where to golf: Etched into the hilly countryside near Zanesville, EagleSticks Golf Club is off the beaten path. In fact, as you drive up the Maysville Pike, you won’t see a fairway or flagstick from the road. Constant elevation change is the dominating feature of the course. Many of the tee boxes on this par-70, 6,412-year course are 50 feet above the greens, providing you with panoramic views of the Ohio countryside. From tee to green, you’ll experience a golf course kept in pristine condition, with rolling fairways and meticulously manicured greens. The cost for 18 holes is $40-$50.

Where to stay: Take in the natural wonders of southeast Ohio from the comforts of Salt Fork State Park Resort and Conference Center, in Cambridge, with rooms from $74, or for a bit more seclusion (and your own hot tub), rent the Cabin in the Orchard, Philo, from $160.

What else to see: While in Zanesville, check out the local industry: art pottery. There are many places around town to see potters at work and to buy antique pieces. Don’t miss Zanesville’s famous Y-Bridge, the only bridge you can cross and still be on the same side of the river! For a different kind of diversion, stop by The Wilds, North America’s largest wildlife preservation and research facility, which is home to 16 rhinos and herds of giraffe, antelope, wild horse and camel.
